Seine Bight Sports, Seine Bight Village
Seine Bight Village also has a team, named Wagihameme
By Lisa Carne
Are you a football
(soccer) fan? If so then you have plenty of opportunity to
watch live games in Placencia, Seine Bight and nearby Independence (also
known as Mango Creek) Village.
Placencia has an amateur team called A2J Strikers. The
players’ ages are from 15-28 and they practice almost every evening on
Placencia’s field, across from Wallen’s Market. Visitors are welcome to join
in the practice, no matter your age, or, if you prefer being a spectator,
you can enjoy a drink from the Galley restaurant whose verandah affords a
perfect view of the field.
Seine Bight Village also has a team, named Wagihameme
in the Garifuna language. Their name translates to “It’s still us”. They are
pictured here at a recent marathon. They too practice every evening on Seine
Bight’s newly improved field and welcome participants and spectators alike.
Both Placencia and Seine Bight teams lack equipment and
any contributions of any size cleats, size 5 balls, soccer socks and shin
guards would be greatly appreciated. Placencia’s contact man is Arthur
Vernon, you can find him at BJ’s Restaurant. The Seine Bight team’s
coordinator is Byron Guzman, he tends bar at Robert’s Grove.
The semi-pro season is over until August with our
area’s team the Sagitun F.C. taking the championship for the entire country
- Sagitun All The Way!!!...but the Amateur Playoffs will be continuing
through March. Eight teams will battle on the field in Independence’s
Michael Ashcroft stadium every Wednesday and Friday and some Sundays.
Placencia’s team has already made the cut so ask around town for the next
game time. Independence is about 15 minutes from Placencia by boat through
the mangrove lagoon. A small passage fee should be expected and the entrance
fee for the game will be no more than $10-12 BZ.
See you there!
