A CHALLENGE TO ALL GARIFUNA By Clifford J. Palacio A few weeks ago, while talking to a young Garifuna college student, I suddenly realized that our young Garifuna face a real challenge. In that conversation we touched upon a number of issues and topics related to the Garifuna culture and history. We talked at length about some of the questions that Garifuna students are often asked by their friends. Needless to say that Garifuna student was unaware of many facts about the Garifuna culture and history. As a result the individual could not cope well.

Here is a challenge for our Garifuna readers. How would you personally answer the following questions intelligently and satisfactorily? How do you measure up on the following questions? Is your last name (surname) Spanish? How did you get it? Are you Italian? There seems to be something different about you. Are you mixed? What is Garifuna? What is Punta rock? From where does that music come? What language do your parents speak? Is it African? Have you heard of Balliceaux? What happened there? Have you heard of the Carib War?
