Definitions according to THE AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLEGE dic.tion.ar.y, Third bEdition:
a) mid.wife n A person, usually a woman, who is trained to assist women in
childbirth. Also called regionally granny.
b) mid.wife.ry n The techniques and practices of midwife.
c) Word History: When compound word “midwife” was formed in the Middle English (first recorded around 1300), wife meant “woman” not just “a married woman”. Mid is probably a preposition, meaning “together with”. Thus a midwife was literally a “with woman” or “a woman” who assists other women in childbirth.
Midwifery is as old as man. The techniques and practices of assisting women in childbirth were always practiced in every community regardless of the standard of advancement. Techniques were gradually developed by the “trial and error” method and eventually guidelines were organized. In Seine Bight where the writer grew up, this practice was limited to older women (senior citizens) who traditionally passed on their knowledge to other women.
What was amazing about those women (grannies) was the fact that they were remarkably accurate at feeling the fetus and revealing that a woman was positively pregnant. They were able to say whether the lump manually felt was simply a growth or a potential baby. In addition to assisting women in childbirth the village midwives helped in prenatal and postnatal care.
The early inhabitants of Seine Bight were pioneers. No one to date knows precisely when the first Garinagu landed at “Carib Ball” near Placentia before the inhabitants moved to present-day Seine Bight. It is certain that the first child born in Seine Bight was with help of a midwife.
