In
the villages at the southern end of the parish we saw the damage caused by Hurricane
Iris a few weeks previously. Many of the wooden houses had been blown down and
many roofs had been blown off. The Church in Seine Bight, built on stilts, had
been blown off and completely destroyed. Several schools and churches had parts
of their roofs blown off though most had been repaired by the time we got there.
Fr. Tony and the aid agencies had provided the necessary galvanised tin sheets.
Plans are afoot to build a block church in Seine Bight. They are using the school
meanwhile as a church. At the time of the hurricane most people had moved inland
or to secure buildings prior to the storm. There was thought to be only one death
in the parish, that of a small girl whose chest had been cut open by a sheet of
flying tin.
